McCord Power Plate 2
Frequently Asked Questions
» Where can I buy an MPP2?
You can only purchase the MPP2 through this website. No other shops carry it at this time. If you want a shop to install your MPP2, we can ship it directly to the shop so that it will be there for your install.
» What cutouts will the MPP2 fit?
The MPP2 was designed to fit a myriad of cutouts that are available on the market. The most popular cutout seems to be the Flowtech cutout available at most speed shops such as LS1Speed ,Jegs ,Thunder Racing ,TByrne Motorsports , and LG Motorsports . One of the least expensive cutouts are available through Summit Racing, 3 inch 2-1/2 inch .
» What if I've had a cutout fabricated at the muffler shop?
As long as the muffler shop has stuck with a standard header flange spacing, you should be alright. But, you can download this template for the 3" version ( Acrobat Format ) or the 2-1/2" version( Acrobat Format )and print it out to use as a test fit to ensure your MPP2 will fit. Just make sure the two 1 inch lines measure 1 inch when it comes off of your printer.
» The bolts on the cutout are very short, is this a problem?
The MPP2 has been relieved for the short bolts that most cutouts come with. We do recommend that you replace the wing nuts that come with your cutout with standard nuts. Do not use locking nuts with nylon inserts because the nylon will melt. Use a quality lock washer and some high temp loctite red to insure your MPP2 stays attached to your cutout. You should torque the nuts to 27 ft-lbs.
» How long does it take to go from open to close and vice versa?
The MPP2 comes standard with a motor and gearbox that opens in roughly 4 seconds. This speed allows you to stop the plate anyplace in between open and close to "tune" the power levels that you desire. Voltage levels of your vehicle can affect the overall opening speed.
» I've got true dual exhaust with 2 cutouts. Will the MPP2 work?
Absolutely. The MPP2 was designed from the begining to work as a dual synchronized system. Customers who get the dual version get two MPP2s that are controlled by a single switch and LED.
» Are there any issues with the Borla?
The Borla system usually fits flawlessly. But, occasionally, the alignment of the pipe into the flange is a bit sloppy (click to see pic). This lip can cause an interference with the moving butterfly. If your borla looks like this, you will need to grind off this excess before installing your plate.

Another issue that we've seen is excessive warpage on the flange from Borla. If you notice this, you can use a standard header collector gasket to help take up this warpage.
» How long does it take to install?
The MPP2 is typically installed in 1 to 2 hours, depending on how familiar you are with your vehicle. A complete list of tools required is located in the installation instructions . Most of the installation is performed within the interior of the vehicle.
» What kind of warranty is provided with the MPP2?
The warranty period is 1 year on the motor and gearbox, the body, and all other electronics. Complete details on the warranty period are covered in the installation instructions. Unused MPP2s that are returned for refund are subject to a 25% restocking fee. Shipping charges are not covered nor refunded.
» Where can I mount the switch?
Most people mount the switch somewhere on the center console. Each MPP2 comes with 12 feet of high quality, Beldon cable (not network CAT5 cable). This should be enough to reach just about anywhere on the console or area immediately around the console. If you need more length on the wire, please note this on your order. There is a charge of $2 per extra foot of cable required over 12 feet.
» Can I use a different switch?
Some customers like to use a switch that matches their interior motif. Upon request, we will send you the wiring schematic to incorporate your own switch, or, you can send us the switch that you want that meets our specifications and we will wire it into your MPP2 for no additional charge.
We now are providing the convertible F-car switch and power window switch as options. Just send us your switch or contact us for details of providing it for you. You will also have to pay for an additional part that required to make the switch work. Again, contact us for specifics.
» What hole sizes are required for the switch and LED?
As stated in the installation instructions , you will need to drill a 3/4" and 3/16" hole to accomodate the switch and LED. The LED can be located up to 6 inches away from the switch. If you need a longer LED lead, please note this on ordering and we can custom configure it.
» What colors does the LED come in?
Right now, the LED is only available in red.
» How does the LED function?
The standard configuration for the LED is that the LED lights when the plate is either in the open or closed position. When the plate is transisitioning, the LED will be off. Users can request that the LED be switched so that it is on during transision and off when either closed or opened. This needs to be specified when ordering.
» What if I don't want to run the LED?
The thought behind the LED was to let you know when the plate is either opened or closed. This gives you visual feedback and lets you know when to let off the switch. But, if you choose not to install the LED, that's fine. Circuitry is added to the MPP2 to prevent the motor from over rotating and causing damage to either it or the gearcase.
» How well does the MPP2 stand up to water?
All connections on the MPP2 are soldered and heat shrink wrapped to keep them weatherproof. Short of parking your car in a lake, water will not pose any problems.
» How well does the MPP2 stand up to heat?
All components that are exposed directly to exhausts gasses are stainless steel with the exception of the body itself. The bodies main heat is drawn through conduction of the exposed bore area, which as a percentage of overall material thickness is minor. Therefore, testing shows that the body stays very cool compared to the temperature of the exhaust gasses. Furthermore, the body is cooled as air passes underneath the car and strikes the body. The motor is thermally isolated from the exhaust gasses through the coupler and the mount. To this date, we have not had one unit fail due to problems caused by heat, water, vibration or cold. Here is a breakdown of materials and the heat at which they start to melt (solidus):
  • 304 Stainless Steel (butterfly, shaft) 2550ºF
  • 6061-T6 Aluminum (body, motor mount) 1080ºF
  • 304 Cast Iron (motor coupler) 2100ºF
  • Zinc Plated Steel (fasteners) 2650ºF
